How and why can some scanners perform dual-read detection and some can’t?

09 April 2021

Some barcode scanners dedicate computer processing power exclusively to Digimarc Barcode detection, while other vendors do not. Because dual-mode detection effectively requires two reads – one for 75 WPI and another for 150 WPI – that requires additional processing power. Because some scanner models employ a single processor for detecting all symbologies, asking these vendors to read two Digimarc Barcode resolutions at once can increase the read times and put their models at a speed disadvantage relative to competing products. Naturally, OEMs are reluctant to reduce the speed at which their products detect barcodes at retail.
